Are we all deficient in Magnesium?
It's estimated that a significant portion of the population may be deficient in magnesium. This is a concern because magnesium is an essential mineral that plays a role in many bodily functions, including the regulation of muscle and nerve function, blood sugar levels, and blood pressure.
Factors that can contribute to magnesium deficiency include a diet that is low in magnesium-rich foods, certain medical conditions (such as gut disorders or kidney disease) that can interfere with the absorption or excretion of magnesium, and certain medications (such as diuretics or antibiotics) that can cause magnesium loss. Additionally, alcohol consumption and high stress levels may also contribute to magnesium deficiency.
That being said some groups of people are more likely to be deficient in magnesium, such as older adults, people with gastrointestinal disorders, people with type 2 diabetes, and alcoholics. Also, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, and people who are taking certain medications may have a higher risk of deficiency.
What foods contain Magnesium?
There are many foods that contain magnesium, including both plant-based and animal-based sources. Some examples of magnesium-rich foods include:
- Leafy green vegetables: Spinach, kale, and other leafy greens are excellent sources of magnesium.
- Nuts and seeds: Almonds, cashews, pumpkin seeds, and sunflower seeds are all high in magnesium.
- Legumes: Black beans, kidney beans, lentils, and chickpeas are all good sources of magnesium.
- Whole grains: Whole wheat, brown rice, oats, and quinoa are all high in magnesium.
- Fish: Salmon, mackerel, and halibut are good sources of magnesium, as are oysters and scallops.
- Dark chocolate: Cocoa beans are one of the most concentrated food sources of magnesium, and therefore dark chocolate is also high in magnesium.
- Yogurt or Kefir
- Certain type of dried fruits
It is worth mentioning that processed food, refined grains and sugars are relatively low in magnesium. Also, cooking and storage may cause loss of magnesium from food.
It's important to note that the actual amount of magnesium in food can vary depending on the specific growing conditions and preparation methods used. Therefore, it's always a good idea to consult a nutrition professional or a registered dietitian to get more specific information.
