Healthy granola and muesli
Muesli was developed by a Swiss Physician in the early 1900’s. Originally it was made with a small amount of raw, rolled oats with an equal amount of ground almonds plus lemon juice, condensed milk and a large, freshly grated apple. Nowadays we add a variety of things such as nuts, seeds, dried fruit and even vegetables for a more savoury variety and it is traditionally served soaked in milk.
Granola was developed in the US in the late 1890’s and usually contains oats along with nuts, seeds, dried fruit but can also be made with any other suitable grains such as barley or rye. The mixture is then tossed with oil and sweetened with honey or maple syrup and baked to form crunchy clusters.
Both are regarded as more healthy breakfast cereals as a small amount leaves you feeling full and a serving provides a good source of fibre, vitamins and minerals. Many people enjoy a serving as a healthy snack at any time of day.
