SAW PALMETTO: Supporting male health
The berries of the saw palmetto plant, found in the West lndies and south east USA, have long been used as a traditional remedy for men to help with urinary tract problems. Much studied as the herb of choice for supporting men in their 50s and over, it may help ease transition through the male 'andropause: the age when testosterone levels start to drop.
The fall in testosterone has a knock on effect on weight, strength, hair growth and libido, and can signal the onset of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) such as frequent urge to urinate, especially at night, inability to empty bladder and dribbling after urinating. The symptoms can be bothersome and tiring and increase with age, affecting 3% of men aged 40-44 but 40% of the over 75s.
The cause of LUTS is unclear but may be linked to hormonal changes within the prostate.
Supplementation with saw palmetto has been shown to statistically improve urinary symptoms; lycopene concentrates in the prostate and studies have demonstrated synergy with selenium and saw palmetto: increasing anti-inflammatory action and reducing prostate enlargement.
We have a range of saw Palmetto products available. Here are two of our most popular but you can see all of them all here.
