Antioxidant Pink Power!29 October 2018 | Editor by jenny Bodenham BA (Hons). Dip. ION Derived from the algae, haematococcus pluvialis, the naturally pink pigment, astaxanthin is known to have a powerful antioxidant effect throughout the body, combating oxidative stress. This has been reinforced by a mini-review from researchers that has focused specifically on the role of oxidative stress in the promotion of mitochondrial dysfunction, which in turn is believed to be associated with a range of age-related conditions. They propose that the potent antioxidant activity of astaxanthin may prevent mitochondrial dysfunction induced by oxidative stress and so potentially play a protective role in conditions such as inflammatory and metabolic diseases as well as supporting the immune and cardiovascular systems and protecting skin and eyes.
