YOU ARE WHEN YOU EAT We’re always being told, “You are what you eat”. Whilst this is true new research also suggests that the time we eat food is also key to maintaining our health.
A collaboration with Kings College London and the University of Amsterdam reviewed irregular meal patterns and cardiovascular and metabolic consequences. Studies showed a significant trend towards risk of high BMI and blood pressure with irregular meals. This includes eating meals at greatly different times each day, as well as eating food/ snacking late in the evenings. A link was also found between children consistently eating after 8pm and childhood obesity in the UK. Naturopathically speaking, these findings do not come as any surprise. It’s widely known in traditional naturopathy the need to maintain balance and harmony across all the rhythms in the body, including the 24h day/night cycle (or circadian rhythms). These rhythms, maintained in part by carefully timed balance of hormones released across a 24h period, directly influence the cellular environment including hydration, pH balance, body temperature, light and oxygen utilisation. Modern diets, including irregular meals and eating late into the evening, and lifestyles pull us away from and alter these natural universal rhythms, including the circadian bio-clock, with powerful repercussions for our health. To remain balanced, open and healthy, we need to be able to dance with the rhythms of nature (including sun and lunar cycles and seasons) and consider the times we eat during the day, as well as the types and combinations of food we consume. Only by connecting to food and balancing our lifestyles in this way can we really move towards maintaining good health. Please read the new Nutrigold newsletter “The Importance of Balancing Body pH” for more naturopathic nutrition information. Don't forget that however hard we try, we don't usually get all the nutrients we need from the food we eat. It's a good idea to consider a daily multivitamin supplement. Many of these are just one a day and some are designed more specifically: See these Links: . . . and don't forget about our current discounts. See them here. Kind regards Health4youonline.com |
