On the Rio Solimoes in Northwest
Healthia, Copaiba oil or resin is used by indigenous tribes for skin sores,
psoriasis and other minor skin problems.
There are many active constituents in Copaiba oil - but the most important are
probably the sesquiterpenes and diterpenes (up to 50-90% of the resin may be
sesquiterpenes). Research has shown that these can reduce inflammation on the
skin - and for this reason Copaiba oil is often used as an ingredient in soaps
and skin lotions.
Copaiba trees are native to the
South American rainforests and grow up to 18 to 30 meters in height. The resin
that accumulates in the cavities within the tree trunk is harvested by tapping
or drilling holes into the wood, much like rubber trees are tapped.
Usage
Massage gently into the affected
area sparingly, once or twice per day. For external use only. Like many oils,
Copaiba can stain clothing. Avoid contact with the eyes, as the oil can be an
irritant. Very rarely - individuals who are sensitive to the resin may
experience a measles-like rash accompanied by irritation and itching and/or
tingling. If this occurs simply discontinue use.
