PSORIASIS

About Psoriasis

Psoriasis is an extremely common skin disorder, in which skin cells divide roughly 1000 times faster than normal skin.  A number of factors appear to be responsible for psoriasis, including incomplete protein digestion, toxicity in the bowel, impaired liver function, alcohol consumption and eating excessive animal fat.  Stress, particularly emotional stress and self-protection, are also often involved.  Some people experience an associated arthritis that is similar to rheumatoid arthritis.

Nutrition Facts & Diet Advice for Psoriasis

Consider the following nutrition guidelines:

  • Eat a high-fibre diet consisting of raw and lightly steamed vegetables and fruit.

  • Eat whole grains such as brown rice, millet, buckwheat, oats, spelt, kamut, quinoa and amaranth.

  • It’s important to eat oily fish (or take fish oil or flaxseed supplements) every day.

  • Add flaxseed (linseeds) to your diet every day, accompanied by water.

  • Avoid citrus fruit, sugar, alcohol, white flour, white rice, beef, pork and lamb, dairy produce and fried food.

  • Drink at least 1½ litres of spring or filtered water every day.

Other advice

  • Follow some kind of cleansing programme.  See Four Week Cleanse and Colon Cleansing.

  • Use essential oils of ginger or lavender in the bath.  Two or three drops are sufficient.

  • Make poultices from yellow dock, goldenseal, chaparral and dandelion.

  • 15-30 minutes of sunlight can be helpful.  Excess sun exposure can cause cancer, so don’t overdo it.

  • Biofeedback and/or hypnosis may be helpful.

Often, a combination of supplements may help in alleviating this condition. You may wish to consult a nutritional therapist for personal advice. Supplements that may be helpful in alleviating symptoms are shown below: (please also read this important notice concerning supplement medical claims)
