Herpes
simplex causes cold sores, usually on the edge of the mouth, and genital herpes.
It can also cause a form of shingles, often later in life, and
inflammation of the cornea of the eye. If
it does affect the eye, it’s particularly important to deal with it properly
and prevent it re-occurring, as loss of vision and scarring can result.
Probably
up to about 80% of Americans and British people have been infected with one or
more type of herpes virus, possibly more, though only half of these show
symptoms. It’s highly infectious
until the lesions are completely healed.

The following nutrition guidelines should be considered:

During
an attack, avoid foods high in the amino acid arginine (chocolate,
almonds, brazil nuts, cashew nuts, coconut, hazelnuts, linseeds, peanuts,
pecans, walnuts, sesame seeds and walnuts.
When the lesions are healed, it’s good to eat them again as they
contain valuable oils and calcium and magnesium.

To
help prevent reoccurrence, help the immune system by eating a generally
healthy diet - high fibre, lots of fresh vegetables of all colours,
fruits, some fish, skinless chicken and turkey, wholegrains.

Drink
at least 1½ litres of spring or filtered water every day.

Avoid
sugar, excess coffee and alcohol and refined foods.

Deal
with stress as much as possible and get enough sleep and exercise.
