EAR
INFECTION
(back to nutrition
facts A to Z menu)
Most
children suffer at least once, and often repeatedly, from middle ear infection.
The main causes of ear infection are bacterial infection and food allergy.
Antibiotics, when compared with placebo treatments, have not been shown
to be helpful in speeding up the healing, but instead multiplies the risk of
getting another infection. Having
said that, middle
ear infection can be serious and should always be seen by a medical Doctor.
Recurrent ear infection is strongly associated with early bottle feeding,
whilst breastfeeding of at least six months has a protective effect.
This is probably often due to the combination of breast-fed babies
avoiding the cow’s milk allergy, and also receiving natural immunity through
the breast milk. Breast milk is also high in essential fatty acids which are
anti-inflammatory.
