DANDRUFF

(back to nutrition facts A to Z menu)

What is Dandruff?

Dandruff is a common scalp condition in which dead skin looking like white flakes are shed.  The most common cause of dandruff is seborrhea, which is inflammation of the oil-secreting glands.  Deficiencies of B Complex vitamins, essential fatty acids and selenium can also contribute to dandruff, as can excess sugar and refined carbohydrate consumption.

Nutrition Facts & Diet Advice for Dandruff

Following the nutrition advice below can significantly help to alleviate dandruff:

  • Eat a large percentage of your diet as raw vegetables and fruit.

  • Also eat some almonds, hazelnuts, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds and pumpkin seeds every day.

  • Every day have a tablespoon of linseeds with two large glasses of water, and 1-2 Brazil nuts.

  • Drink at least 1½ litres of water per day.

  • Avoid fried foods, dairy products (except sheep or goat yoghurt), sugar, white flour, and chocolate.

  • Avoid excess alcohol.

  • It may help if you add a little vinegar to the rinsing water after washing your hair.

Health Supplements

Often, a combination of supplements may help in alleviating this condition. You may wish to consult a nutritional therapist for personal advice. Supplements that may be helpful in alleviating symptoms are shown below:
