Vitamin C (ascorbic acid)
These days many of us are more than aware of the need to obtain a good source of Vitamin C in our diet as it is known to be involved in the assimilation of non haem iron and the production of collagen and hence is involved in the renewal and integrity of connective tissue. Vitamin C is also noted to help maintain a healthy immune system, bones, skin, blood cells, teeth and gums. Vitamin C in our diets is easily damaged by oxygen, metal ions, increased PH, heat or light. The richest sources of Vitamin C are citrus and soft fruits and the growing points of vegetables, whereas unsprouted cereals and their products contain virtually none.
The optimum levels for adult males and females is suggested to be 250mg daily. However, if you are looking to support a specific nutritional need you can use higher levels (HMFA suggested upper safety levels for long terms use is 2000mg often referred to as USL levels). The official Government recommended daily allowance (RDA) for Vitamin C is 80mg.
