There is much in the media about supplementing with Omega 3 oils and for good reason. The two main fats that are essential in our diet are Omega 3 and Omega 6, as we are unable to manufacture them in the body. Many people naturally think that fats are to do with weight gain and best avoided. However, many of our body processes cannot take place without these essential substances being present.

There is often plenty of Omega 6 fatty acids in our diet, but Omega 3 fats are not as abundant, hence its often considered a positive nutritional step to supplement extra Omega 3 . The majority of us are capable of converting Omega 3 in the form of a-linolenic acid to eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), the functional forms found in fish oils. These are the ‘ready to go’ fatty acids. However, those who are vegetarian or vegan, or those who do not like the taste of fish oil, may find our Flaxseed Oil capsules an excellent source of Omega 3.

As Omega 6 is found more readily in foods, it becomes considerably more important to increase our levels of Omega 3. Flaxseed oil, also known as linseed oil, is very high in a vegetable source of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids, but as an oil, it is unique in that it has a higher Omega 3 ratio to Omega 6, (approximately 3:1). Although they are both essential, they work independently and follow different metabolic pathways, often working in opposition to each other. Thus, taking Omega 6 will not increase the body’s Omega 3 intake and vice versa.

The Omega 3 fats have a variety of functions but are thought to support immune, nervous and cardiovascular functions, as well as eyes, joints and bones. In addition, these Omega fats have been found to be supportive for breast feeding women. It is also considered helpful in cognitive function, including brain development in early life. They are also helpful in increasing the availability of the important fat soluble vitamins A, D and E, which have well documented antioxidant functions.
