'Flexibility' heralds a new era for arthritis sufferers

DOCTORS have reported numerous deaths and serious adverse reactions which they suspect were due to the painkiller Vioxx, a drug used by many arthritis sufferers.

Vioxx was taken off the market after a long-term study found that the risk of heart attacks and strokes was doubled if patients took the drug for 18 months.

Hundreds of British patients who claim they had heart attacks after taking Vioxx lost the right to fight for compensation in the US after a prolonged legal battle last year. Members of Parliament are upset that the Vioxx $4.85 billion settlement extends only to people in the US and are calling for a deal that would compensate UK patients.

Pamela Eaton, 71, from North Norfolk, says she was put on Vioxx after suffering from arthritis for years. “I’m 71 and I’ve never had high blood pressure,” she told The Times. “Then, after taking Vioxx for three years, I had a coronary and had to have an operation. I feel what’s happened isn’t fair.”

So far, Merck are refusing to strike similar deals with Vioxx users in 18 other countries, and with just six weeks to go until the cut-off for court action, the prospect of compensation for 500 UK patients is receding. No money is available for legal-aid claims and UK litigants, unlike those in the US, may have to pay Merck’s bills if they lose. “No win, no fee” lawyers have refused to take up the case because they regard it as too risky (The Times, 10th May 2008)

Arthritis sufferers are worried and wondering which drugs are safe and which one may be next to be withdrawn from the market. All pharmaceutical drugs have side effects - that is a fact - the question is how dangerous are these side effects and are they worse than the disease they are supposed to help?

In the case of Vioxx, the side effects were a doubled risk of heart attack and strokes - deadly side effects!

There are many different types of arthritis that you might suffer from:

  • osteoarthritis
  • gout
  • fibromyalgia
  • rheumatoid arthritis
  • 200 other forms of this disease

You need a safe and effective natural arthritis pain relief treatment that is safe and viable for long term use.

So where does this leave the unfortunate person seeking arthritis pain relief?

Natural Solutions

Natural arthritis medication is a very effective and safe option used by thousands of people.

Natural ingredients we would suggest include Glucosamine, Chondroitin and Collagen. These create new cartilage, and strengthen existing cartilage.

Plus the new exciting Hyaluronic acid to rebuild and repair the vital cartilage found in every moving joint.

The best of the new supplements are also looking at reducing the inflammation and the consequent joint pain. Ingredients such as omega-3 fish oil, serrapeptidase, hops, olive leaf extract and aloe vera are very useful here.

A topical gel from Bioforce, Atrogel, has been found in studies to be as effective as the commonly used synthetic topical painkiller, ibuprofen gel. Clinical experience shows that a significant number of people experience pain relief within a few minutes of their first application of Atrogel, and it does not make you smell of a medicine chest.

Homoeopathy and Arthritis

Homoeopathic remedies to relieve immediate pain and joint stiffness may include Rhus Tox. or Bryonia. The first trial of homoeopathic treatment in rheumatoid arthritis published in a mainstream medical journal was conducted in Glasgow in 1980. It involved 46 patients with rheumatoid arthritis taking orthodox anti-inflammatory treatment. There were significant improvements in pain, joint tenderness and stiffness in patients receiving homoeopathic remedies. Patients taking placebo showed no benefits. There were no side effects seen with homoeopathic remedies.

Arthritis and Exercise

Exercise is great for arthritis as well. Gentle exercises such as yoga, pilates, swimming and walking are suitable. Stretch well before exercising and in the case of an attack of gout, wait until the pain and inflammation has subsided before starting.
