EPIDEMIC OF CHRONIC DISEASE IS LARGELY PREVENTABLE

  • We know that Life Expectancy is higher than ever before.

  • We also know that the main reason for this is improved sanitation, resulting in fewer infectious diseases.

  • Unfortunately, other diseases have taken their place.

  • Diabetes, heart disease and cancer are now the major killers.

  • Few people realise that this epidemic of chronic disease is largely preventable through diet and lifestyle changes.

  • Although good nutrition is the foundation of good health, many people do not reach their recommended target intakes for vitamins and minerals. This is largely due to poor food choice, and depleted soils which result in reduced quality food crops.

How's Your Diet?

If you experience symptoms of ill health such as fatigue, low mood or frequent infections, then first of all consider your diet.

  1. Are you eating enough fruit and vegetables? The Nutritional Supplement Recommended Intake is five portions of vegetables and fruit per day, to provide the vitamins and minerals and phytonutrients we need. These foods also contain antioxidants which are particularly important, and yet most people fail to achieve even half the Nutritional Supplement Recommended Intake.
  2. Do you choose wholegrain cereal products instead of the white refined sources? Wholegrains are rich sources of magnesium, trace elements and B complex vitamins. White flour and rice contain almost no nutrients.
  3. Do you have a balance of the essential fatty acids, omega 3 and omega 6? When we eat too much omega-6 (found in most margerines and 'cooking oils', and too little omega-3 (found in oily fish and flaxseed), the balance is upset and we become prone to inflammation*.

If you answered 'no' to any of these, then a change in diet should be your first priority.

A few good quality supplements are intended to augment a good diet, not to replace it.

The most important of these would include a multivitamin and mineral supplement, some omega-3 and a top class probiotic.

*Inflammatory conditions include eczema, arthritis, sinusitis, psoriasis, and even Alzheimer's Disease.
