YOU
ARE WHAT YOU EAT
Channel 4, 8.30 p.m. Tuesday for the next
6 weeks
If you were to open your fridge right
now, what would be in it? Is it stocked full of healthy greens, or
with processed convenience foods, fatty snacks and last night’s
takeaway? If we really are what we eat, what do your shopping and eating
habits say about you?
Straight-talking gillian mckeith has the answers.
“You parents should be
arrested and locked up in jail for this kind of child abuse. How dumb must
you be to feed your precious wee ones like this?” she reprimands one
couple who feed their four children almost exclusively on junk food.
“You two could fart for England. I really can’t take the smell in your
house. I’ve got to get out of here!” she tells another couple about
one consequence of their terrible diet.
The nutritionist of choice for Hollywood
stars, royalty, even world leaders, she’s here to prosecute Britain’s
absolute worst eaters for crimes against their own bodies – the kind of
people who are carrying extra stones rather than pounds, and are literally
killing themselves with food.
According to Gillian, food is behind some of our terrible health problems
– affecting everything from our general mood to our sexual health.
Through a series of sometimes shocking tests, YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT
will reveal exactly how a poor diet and obesity lead to health problems,
and give practical advice on changing a lifetime of bad habits.
Gillian has scoured the country to find people whose diets will shock and
horrify us. Each week she’ll take an up-close and very personal look at
what their food is doing to their body - then she’ll transform the way
they eat and feel forever.
In the course of the series Gillian encounters, among others, 40-year-old
Nick, whose boozy social life leads to late night binges, crisp addict
Yvonne whose terrible wind has driven her friends to despair, and John and
Lisa, a couple who realise that they are eating themselves into an early
grave but cannot break their fast food habits.
At the start of each episode, Gillian confronts each volunteer with
exactly what they have eaten over the past week by laying it out in front
of them on their very own ‘bad food table’. Then she breaks down the
nutritional value of their diet and challenges them with the results. Her
aim is to shock them into a change of ways, so taking the tough-love
approach, she tells it how it is:
“You parents should be arrested and locked up in jail for this kind of
child abuse. How dumb must you be to feed your precious wee ones like
this?” she reprimands one couple who feed their four children almost
exclusively on junk food.
“You two could fart for England. I really can’t take the smell in your
house. I’ve got to get out of here!” she tells another couple about
one consequence of their terrible diet.
“Your husband is a bad influence on you”, she says to another, “get
rid of him!”
Gillian will demonstrate what effect this appalling diet is having on the
volunteers’ health by putting them through a series of tests from blood
and urine analysis, to tongue profiling and getting to grips, quite
literally, with their faeces. Once the testing is out the way, the
intrepid volunteers will be given a colonic, and then started on a
completely new eating programme.
They can eat as much as they want of the new foods and if they do it
should not only see them begin to lose the extra pounds but also cure
their ailments and restore them to good health. But will it, and can they
stick it out? After eight weeks on the new regime the doctor returns to
see whether a transformation has taken place.
Each 30-minute episode tells one complete story – be it of a family,
couple, or individual – we have seen 2 episodes and have 6 to come.
These promise to be full of the drama, emotion, conflict and joy of real
people striving to make real change in their lives, whilst at the same
time providing a wealth of essential information and advice on diet and
healthy living for viewers of all shape, size and age everywhere.
If you're hoping to have an appointment
with Gillian though, forget it. She has a 2 year waiting list of
celebrities. To find a fully qualified nutritional therapist, many of whom
