Depression: Worse than Chronic Illness?

"Our main findings show that depression impairs health state to a substantially greater degree than the four other chronic diseases."

"If you live for one year with diabetes and depression together you are living the equivalent of 60 percent of full health."

So wrote Somnath Chatterji, from the World Health Organisation, in the Lancet Medical Journal recently.

He and his team of researchers determined the effect of depression on the participants of the study by questioning them about their ability to function in everyday life. According to their answer, the person's health score was graded from 0 to 100.

It emerged from the study that a combination of depression and diabetes had the most disabling effect.

Chatterji went on to say that "What tends to happen is a health provider doesn't look for anything else but the chronic illness", highlighting the need to deal with the depression, if you want to help the person be healthy overall.

Sometimes the person suffering from depression may realise their problem.

Sometimes depression gets mixed up with anxiety.
