More about Goldenseal
Anti-biotic
Due to its content of alkaloids (e.g. hydrastine,
berberine, canadine), goldenseal exerts a broad spectrum of anti-bacterial activity against pathogens such as staphylococcus,
streptomyces, chlamydia, corynebacterium diphtheria, escherichia coli, salmonella
typhi, vibrio cholera, etc.
Anti-fungal
Scientific evidence also points to a potent anti-fungal activity, which make it a useful treatment in dealing with candida albicans infection. This benefit, in tandem with its anti-bacterial effect have made goldenseal an especially attractive alternative to prescribed antibiotics, which are frequently the cause of fungal infections in the first place.
Anti-parasitic
Goldenseal has also demonstrated activity against many parasites, which along with its antibiotic properties is of great value in helping to prevent or treat
'traveller's diarrhoea' and many cases of food poisoning.
Anti-diarrhoeal
The broad-spectrum anti-microbial capabilities of goldenseal have led to impressive results in studies involving the treatment of diarrhoea.
Mucous membrane soothing
Goldenseal displays soothing properties to inflamed mucous membranes, which along with its anti-microbial benefits, explains its frequent use in sinus, intestinal and urinary tract infections.
Immune Boosting
Aside from directly killing pathogenic organisms, goldenseal's berberine alkaloids are potent immune boosting agents due primarily to raising white blood cell activity and improving blood supply to the spleen (a major organ of the immune system).
Liver tonic
Berberine has been shown to both stimulate bile secretion and correct metabolic abnormalities in liver dysfunction.
Inhibitor of bowel toxicity and 'leaky gut'
The alkaloids in goldenseal inhibit the formation of polyamines, toxins produced in the intestines from the putrefaction of undigested protein by bacteria. Polyamines damage the integrity of the intestinal lining producing excessive permeability (leaky gut) and as such increase the risk of food allergies. If absorbed into the system polyamines are associated with triggering or exacerbating psoriasis and certain forms of arthritis (e.g. rheumatoid).

Herbs
For thousands of years, herbs have been used to help maintain many
aspects of health and wellness. Today, research and technology are
bringing herbalism into the modern age – with improved extraction,
standardization, and farming methods. Clinical studies are
beginning to validate herbal therapies, so even some in the
medical community are starting to accept them.
Many of today’s
medicines were originally derived from botanicals. Aspirin once came from the
white willow tree, quinine from the bark of the cinchona tree, and digitalis
from foxglove. Herbs are still the basis for Chinese medicine and are important
constituents of many European natural remedies. As Hippocrates said, “Let they
food by thy medicine, thy medicine be thy food”.
Some of the herbs
available on this site are wild-crafted – grown in the wild – while others are
meticulously cultivated on herb farms.
