Cinnamon has a very long history of use,
for both culinary and medicinal purposes.
New research however, has revealed a
completely new benefit from taking a Cinnamon extract.
Results published in the journal "Diabetes
Care" has revealed a potential new benefit that may be gained from adding
Cinnamon to the diet. In the placebo-controlled clinical trial, researchers
found that Cinnamon was of considerable benefit in controlling blood sugar
levels, and significantly - the participants in the trial all continued to
consume normal diets and take their usual medications through the study,
with no adverse reactions or side effects whatsoever.
Many of us are aware of the many side
effects and health problems that may arise from unstable blood sugar levels
- including:
- mood problems
- fatigue
- and increased fat storage
and how these can impact on our general
health.
In the human body Insulin is made by the
pancreas to ensure that glucose (sugar) is absorbed by the muscles and
tissues to provide energy. As a result of this process the levels of sugar
in the blood gradually decrease.
However - problems can arise when the body
does not develop enough Insulin, or it does not work efficiently enough in
the body - often resulting in high blood sugar and lipid levels (which
contribute to fat storage).
The new research discovered that Cinnamon can help not only to increase the
effectiveness of Insulin, but can also reduce cholesterol levels and
increase glucose absorption. Therefore, Cinnamon extracts may be of great
benefit to diabetics.
Research is still ongoing into the many
benefits of Cinnamon, which may lead us to re-evaluate the role that this
familiar spice has to play in Western society, where problems associated
with the highest ever sugar intake of any generation in history are
impacting on the health of a huge number of people.
Cinnamon is free from any recorded
interactions and may be safely used alongside any other medication. Cinnamon
is not recommended for use by pregnant women.
