Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) appears to act as a partitioning agent, a nutrient that reduces body fat and promotes lean muscle mass. It is believed that CLA helps mobilise fat out of the fat cells and decrease fat uptake into those cells, while enhancing the body’s ability to burn fat for energy in the muscle tissue. Studies to date suggest that CLA can also benefit the body’s immune function, cardiovascular health, blood sugar management and bone health.

CLA occurs naturally in beef and dairy fats, including cheese and whole milk. Cattle get their CLA by converting some of the linoleic acid they get from grass, but unfortunately nowadays cattle are fed grains and other feeds from which they are less able to make CLA, and humans in turn get less CLA from our diet than we used to. Perhaps that is partly the reason why we get fat so much more easily today than 20 years ago.
