may help symptoms of:
- Mild insomnia
- Nervous tension
-
Restlessness
-
Excitability
- Hyperactive children
Difficulty getting off to sleep and
disturbed sleep patterns are often associated with the pace of life
today.
Many herbs with sedative and hypnotic
properties can help resolve this problem without the addictive and
'hangover' effects associated with many modern drugs.
Both Valerian and Hops serve this
purpose admirably, being the standard herbs used by many Herbalists.
The gentle action of these herbs on the
nervous system makes them suitable for use in children who are
overactive.
A trial comparing Valerian's
effectiveness to Oxazepam (an anxiolytic, close cousin to Diazepam)
found that they were equally effective but that the adverse effects
were less in the Valerian group. This is often where herbal remedies
come into their own: they are as effective as pharmaceutical
preparations but do not have the side effects. Dorn,M. (2000)

Mode of Action
Hops are very useful agents for
restlessness, over-excitability, anxiety, tension and sleep problems.
They contain humulones and lupulones which are metabolised in the body
to a compound known as 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol which exerts a sedative
effect on the central nervous system (CNS).
They are also an antispasmodic bitter,
enhancing digestion and easing intestinal tension.
Valerian is a herbal tranquilliser with
a well established use for those with nervous excitement and disturbed
sleep patterns. It improves the ability to fall asleep, as well as
improving sleep quality.
The relaxing properties are due to the
valepotriates and volatile oils present (especially valerenal and
valerenic acid). Valerenic acid inhibits the breakdown of the
neurotransmitter gamma-amino-butyric acid (GABA), increasing its
concentration. This then leads to a decrease in CNS activity and
sedation.
