How does St. John's Wort work? There is little doubt that Hypericum works by influencing the neurotransmitters in the brain. The substances responsible for this action are thought to be hypericin and hyperforin. However, it is widely accepted that the action of the herb cannot be assigned to a specific constituent, but is rather the balanced effect of all the substances within the plant. It has also been suggested that the action of Hypericum is mediated through the reduction in the number of serotonin receptors. Hypericum has also been found to contain flavonoids which possess analgesic action in those suffering with nerve pain, e.g. neuralgia, shingles and sciatica. Mellissa officinalis (Lemon Balm) has a gentle sedative action, easing tension and anxiety. Nervous digestive disorders are relieved by its carminative, antispasmodic effects on the digestive system. Humulus lupulus (Hops) has a sedative action which is helpful in insomnia. This calming action is also useful in tension states, such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
Research into Hypericum Complex (St John's Wort, with lemon balm and hops) In 1995, Hypericum Complex was the subject of a clinical trial in Switzerland. In this study, 74% of patients with depression were found to have responded to treatment using this product, with the best improvement seen between two and four weeks after commencing treatment. The authors also found Hypericum Complex to be 'very well tolerated'.

Exposure to the sun while taking Hypericum may result in a skin reaction. This is more common when Hypericum is applied externally.
