BioCare Broad Spectrum Amino Acids

Amino Acids are the building blocks of protein. There are 22 known amino acids, of which eight are 'essential'. This means these eight must be obtained from the diet (or supplementation), as they cannot be made in the body.

BioCare Broad Spectrum Amino Acids contains seven of the essential amino acids. Use of the eighth one, Tryptophan, is no longer permitted in the UK (although there are indications that this decision may be reversed in due course), and Tryptophan must therefore be obtained from protein foods such as chicken, fish or algae.

Amino Acids
Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. In fact, the daily protein requirement is really the body's need for amino acids. Dietary amino acids are classified as either essential or non-essential. Both types are used to assemble hormones, neurotransmitters (chemical messengers), antibodies, enzymes, and nutrient carriers.

Essential amino acids - such asl eucine, isoleucine, lysine, threonine, methionine, phenylalanine, tryptophan and valine - cannot be manufactured by the body, so they must be obtained through diet and supplementation.

Non-essential amino acids are equally necessary to help maintain good health, but can be synthesized in the body from essential amino acids. Though classified as "non-essential", the consumption of amino acids such as arginine, ornithine, cysteine, methionine, taurine and tyrosine is beneficial for individuals with certain nutritional concerns.

BCCA (Branched Chain Amino Acids: leucine, isoleucine and valine), act as building blocks for tissue proteins, and play an important part in energy metabolism; they are also precursors of other amino acids.

Glutamic Acid is involved in the metabolism of sugars and fats. It combines with poisonous ammonia in the brain to produce glutamine - a brain fuel which affects brain functions, improving alertness and mood. Dr Robert Erdmann states in his book "The Amino Revolution" that it is used by many people as a pick-me-up, and to treat hypoglycaemia and reduce cravings for alcohol and sweets.

L-Methionine is a sulfur-containing amino acid with antioxidant properties. Methionine is the precursor to cysteine. Methionine is essential to help support growth and development. It is required for protein synthesis and in liver detoxification pathways.

L-Glutathione is a natural sulphur-containing peptide formed by linking three amino acids:glutamic acid, cysteine and glycine. It acts in antioxidant and detoxification systems and is also involved in helping amino acid transport across cell membranes.

L-Phenylalanine helps produce neurotransmitters, the brain's chemical messengers. It is a precursor to tyrosine which is used to manufacture certain hormones, including adrenalin (epinephrine), noradrenalin (norapinephrine), L-dopa, and dopamine. It is also a precursor to tyrosine.
